Black Cows
More than 100 meters high, they extend over 4.5 km between Houlgate and Villers sur Mer. The name "Vaches Noires" comes from the words of sailors, evoking the presence of large blocks of chalk crumbling at their feet on the beach. and covered with algae, which seen from the sea, looked like a herd of cows grazing quietly at the foot of the cliffs.
A protected natural site in Calvados, the cliffs of the Vaches Noires come from the accumulation of Jurassic marine sediment deposits, around 160 million years ago.
